Unique wall decoration shows up


With its intact square Il Campo that encloses the visitor as a Mussel is Siena one of Italy's most beautiful and most intact Gothic cities. Which meant that the town has been called a medieval Pompeii. The great zebra striped Cathedral of white and black marble is also unique.

Something that is rarely addressed is the Church's stunning marble floors with 60 different motif is created by a unique intarsia work. Typically, the floor covered with protective pads, but for a few months every autumn, one can see these unique golvdekorationer in marble with motifs from both Greek mythology which, from the old testament. Shows daily until 24 October.

Il Carroccio is a small place with good food, local specialities on the Via del Casato di Sotto 32 (Tel. 0577 41 165) near Campon. Siena can be reached in a little over an hour by train or bus from Florence. Peter Loewe
